Victoria Cross Cigarette Cards

Complete Sets of Victoria Cross Cigarette Cards

Victoria Crosses are awarded for outstanding act of bravery or as the official papers say "... most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy." and it is well know that this is the highest military award. Only 1,356 have been presented since their introduction back in 1856 by Queen Victoria and interestingly there is a limited supply of the material used to make these medals as the metal used is derived from a Russian cannon captured at the siege of Sevastopol.

The cigarette cards depicting these heroes and their deeds became a very popular subject for collectors and many sets were issued, showing the recipients of the awards and also scenes from the battles where the bravery took place. Some of the famous battles shown on these cigarette cards collections are famous campaigns from the Boer War, Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, the Zulu War, and the Maori War.
